Setting up Identities server

After adding various services and thinking about a lot of new ones, I run into the problem of user management. Every single program has it's own ways of authenticating users so I will end up with a lot of accounts, different passwords and generally kind of a mess. Especially when I want my friends to use those services as well.

Youtube on linux without Flash!

In my search of creating a complete opensource system I needed a way to watch Flash movies with Firefox, in particular Youtube. Since it is proprietary it appears to be quite impossible to get Flash running under Linux in a way it's actually useable. Think of 100% cpu usage, lag while watching fullscreen, let alone using a higher resolution then 240p. (true, my system is a bit outdated, but come on!..)

GIT

Because it's just damn useful for sharing and collaborating on programming homework.

For those who do not know what Git is: it's a distributed version control system, a tool for handling different versions of files, amongst different users.

Memory upgrade

This weekend I upgraded the server from 1Gb of memory to 8Gb (2 sets of Kingston KVR400D2D8R3K2/4G) which opens up a shitload of new possibilities!

In the near future I will host:
- firefox sync
- vpn
- dns
- git
- Firewall?
- Music/movie server?

Guess I'll start with the firefox sync, this will keep all my bookmarks/passwords/history synchronized amongst all my devices, yay! Since I have Kolab running LDAP for the user-accounts, I should be able to use the same accounts for the sync service.

The future of KDE

KDE is a rapid-developing desktop manager for Linux/Windows/Mac. The power lies in the fact a lot of software is written for / useable with -it, making it very complete by default. There are media-players, chat-programs, collection management tools, financial tools, etc.. But what will become part of KDE in the (near) future?

N900

Got my hands on a N900, another dream come true! (Thanks Son ^_^)

My goal is to install KDE(plasma-mobile, kdepim, calligra?) android and meego on it, and make it multiboot. If I'm feeling really adventurous, I might top it of with an

I guess the easiest is to start with meego since it will probably have the best documentation.

New server!

Finally I obtained a decent server!
2 dualcore Xeon (3ghz) cpu
1 GB pc2-3200 ram (will upgrade to 4 gb eventually)
2 250gb sata disks
2 gigabit ethernet

First I set up a raid-1 array:
- Initialise drive 1 & 2
- create new logical drive.

Project idea: "for a coffee and a cookie"

tldr; Offer your geek skills and hack people's lives "for a coffee and a cookie".

Raspberry Pi: Your desktop computer on a usb-stick!

The raspberry Pi: a low-cost ($25), low power (1W), minicomputer.

-UPDATE- - They updated their site and announced shipping will start before the end of 2011. They also have a few updates on the specifications:
- It will be the size of a credit-card
